Mass Engagement!

Anandhi' s
Sandya's
Both my sisters got married in quick sequence. Anandhi married Swami in a typical traditional south indian wedding. Sandya wedded Utpal - Utpal hailing from Assam made the celebrations go across two locations - one at Chennai and another at Assam. Soon parents freed of this responsibility, became grand parents with the arrival of Ram's son Neeraj. Though they continued to live in Chennai and I in Mumbai, it was interesting to see them go through these developments switch gears.

15p post card lifeline for
communication till 90s
At work one got into handling a rural focused product that made me experience the villages in many states. Carrying out a targeted opinion leader sampling across over 500 villages was such a interesting exercise. Census data was available in 8" floppy discs. Manual operations, an agency trying to do it for the first time, no mobiles...It showcased the strength of Indian postal system - the responses used to be based on pre-printed post cards. Post cards then cost less than an sms today (15paise).

Amzing Ian does some 200 concerts a year!
The early years of economic reforms opened up India and the office. At office, the floor started managing both marketing and Exports. Kartik moved into marketing and Rohit joined for Exports. Star & Zee TV, MTV and Sports channels whiffed in entertainment. There was also some kind of cultural outburst in those years. The group frequented plays at NCPA, Prithvi (and its Irish Coffee). Concerts of Bryan Adams and Jehtro Tull - a high point to see Ian Anderson perform live, Bharat Dabholkar's plays - nothing was spared. We also got introduced to the world of the glamour and science behind racing at Mahalaxmi. Work and otherwise the group was tightly knit by doting seniors - Bharat -Alka, Ponappa-Lavina, Ravi-
Bach's illusions
Suganti, Atul- Jayanti, ensuring regular get-togethers, movie evenings and outings.

In my college days my good friend Satish introduced me to Richard Bach's and his reluctant messiah. One line has with me to date. I guess it happens to most of us where there are some thoughts that stay anchored. In the period 93-94 I went through an art revival and did a series of paintings/ illustrations with this line- all works out with friends.. "What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the master calls a butterfly"... there hasn't been a butterfly moment for art since then but well. its not the end of the world...
Ramya Kartik, Mouli Meera, Vidya Sundar
in chennai

Parents had this unfinished mission with a lone bachelor at home. And after a few persistent quarters they found Vidya. Before long Mouli and Kartik also got engaged in quick succession. They say two is co-incidence but what for three? All three of us in the same office got engaged  to 3 women in Chennai and the dates for the three weddings got fixed within 3 weeks of each other in early 95. It was interesting times with us being the fun stock at work and outside with this mass-engagement.
